Join us for a book launch presentation with the authors of Decolonizing Study Abroad through the Identities of Latinx Studies: A Manifesto to Reclaim Identities and Heritage (Routledge, 2024). The book counters the common understanding of study abroad in Latin America as a White and middle-class colonizer practice and re-imagines it to fit the needs of Latinx immigrant/transnational higher education students. The volume will appeal to scholars, researchers, educators, and education officers working across higher education and international education, looking for contemporary, global and forward-thinking decolonial methodologies.
Author bios:
G. Sue Kasun is Professor of Language Education at the College of Education and Human Development, Georgia State University, USA. She has lived and researched extensively in Mexico over more than two decades with publications in various outlets in Mexico and the U.S. Her work centers subjugated knowledges and is geared toward bridge-building.
Beth Marks is a senior lecturer in Secondary & Middle Grades Education at Kennesaw State University. Her research encompasses global engagement focusing on relational approaches and reciprocal relationships with students and local communities using a decolonizing lens.
Julián Jefferies is a professor of Literacy and Reading Education at the California State University, Fullerton. He teaches critical approaches to education and creates opportunities for first-generation Latinx students to engage meaningfully in the cultures of Mexico and Puerto Rico.
